The beautiful Regal Damsel is one of several electric blue damselfish that flaunt a striking yellow highlight as part of their colouration. It is most commonly confused with the very similar-looking Pomacentrus caeruleus (Caerulean Damsel) from the Western Indian Ocean, auriventris (Gold Belly Damsel) from the Western Central Pacific, and Chrysiptera taupou (South Seas Devil Damsel) of the Western Pacific. Regal Damsels are hardy and well suited to the reef aquarium. In the wild, they are found in small aggregations alongside Acropora corals. Although they are considered slightly less aggressive than many damselfish species, as they mature, their belligerence also often increases. It is therefore advisable to keep either a single specimen, a known male-female pair, or a large sized odd-numbered shoal (9+) introduced simultaneously as juveniles into a spacious tank with plenty of hiding places amongst the rockwork. Small groups are often known to suffer fatalities. Choose tankmates with care, avoiding any really docile species such as firefish and cardinalfish. May also be seen on sale as the Azure Damselfish.
